I graduated from the College of Lake County in 2014 with a Certificate and an Associate’s Degree in Sustainable Agriculture. One of the programs that helped was IGEN Career Pathways, which used the NTER Learning System for the Plant Propagation course. This online education environment was a great tool for turning in homework, watching course related videos, and having a discussions with classmates. The class was structured to meet every other week and the rest of the course activities were done through NTER. I found this to be quite convenient and enjoyed having open conversations with my classmates about homework and shared videos. This course structure was also appreciated by commuter students who saved on fuel costs and commuting time.
I was originally going to College of Lake County to get a degree in Communications. I realized after two semesters that I was going to miss Green Youth Farm and being involved in something that I am truly passionate about. I was thinking about changing my major. Through my church, I began working at Green Youth Farm and was there for 4 years. My friend, Jesus Cuezzi, suggested that I take a class with him in the horticulture building. The first class I took was instructed by Dee Sams. She was a volunteer at Green Youth Farm during my second year there. After that, I decided to change my degree focus to Sustainable Agriculture.
I am currently attending Loyola University Chicago working on my bachelors in Sustainable Agriculture: Food Systems. Once I finish at Loyola, I will either attend graduate school or start work in the field. Eventually I want to open a learning farm program for middle school students.
My time at College of Lake County in the Sustainable Agriculture program really helped me on my way to a meaningful career. The instruction was innovative and excellent.
