Climate Ride Death Valley!

Thank you IGEN colleagues, friends, and partners who donated to our first Climate Ride!

IGEN’s Executive Director, Stephen Bell, along with Illinois Green Team partners Michael Brown, Kevin Loseke, and Michael Mazzeo rode 250 miles across Death Valley from February 25 – March 2, 2017.

Together the team raised over $13,000, a portion of which will go to support initiatives and programs of IGEN and the Ecology Action Center. “The ride was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” said Stephen Bell, IGEN’s Executive Director, “Coming from Illinois, which is extremely flat, I had to dig pretty deep to find the will power to keep biking up some of the mountain passes in Death Valley. In the process, I took time to reflect on myself, on the work that we do, and on the future of IGEN. I’m proud of the work that our network accomplishes and look forward to increasing our impact in the future.”

IGEN cycled as part of the Death Valley Climate Ride, February 25 to March 2, 2017.

Climate Ride is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that organizes charitable events to raise awareness and support sustainability, active transportation, and environmental causes.

One of the many things that make Climate Ride such an effective charitable organization is that supporters can select the organization they wish to fundraise for from a list of beneficiary organizations. IGEN, as one of the beneficiaries, was selected for our work on environment, clean energy, sustainability, climate education, and active transportation advocacy.

At the end of the year, Climate Ride grants the proceeds from their events to the organizations that were selected by supporters.

Now, more than ever before, we need your support…

Recent events likely mean an end to national leadership to address climate change and federal regulations requiring gradual reduction of carbon emissions. If we are to avoid significant impacts of climate change, it will be up to local communities to lead the way in emission reductions and resiliency planning. Our community colleges are at the heart of local communities across Illinois, serving as the nexus for government, business, and community organizations.

IGEN joined forces with several Illinois nonprofit environmental agencies, all with missions focused on promoting sustainability across the state. Together we formed the Illinois Green Team.

Although the ride is over, we invite you to support our efforts. You can still contribute and view our rider profiles below.

About the Death Valley Ride

While riding 250 miles over three days, our riders enjoyed a uniquely spectacular experience while raising funds for Illinois environmental organizations. The group was accompanied by professional guides who shared knowledge and interpreted the area’s unique ecosystem.
